Review Canon Pixma TS8250 : Multifunction Inkjet Printer

As the new flagship of the Canon Pixma range, the TS8250 has no room for error. The manufacturer masters so much its recipe that the risk of being disappointed is almost nil. The proof...

Presentation🖨️

The Canon Pixma TS8250 is an inkjet printer with scanner and therefore also provides the function of copier. Sold at a recommended price of €179.99, it is at the top of the range of family multifunction printers from the manufacturer and incorporates all of Canon's know-how in this field. It replaces the excellent Pixma TS8150, rated 5 stars on Les Numériques and still on the market.

Review Canon Pixma TS8250

Ergonomics🔄

If the Pixma TS8150 had the same shape and functions as the TS8050, Canon has made an effort to make some adjustments on this TS8250. The plastic cover of the scanner has a textured finish and a chrome border on the front panel which, on its upper part, adopts a very slight curve.

On the whole, it is rather successful, especially since the printer is really compact with all the flaps closed (37.3 x 31.9 x 14 cm for 6.6 kg), even if the use of shiny plastics is a bit different for our taste - in addition to attracting fingerprints.

Like its predecessors, the Pixma TS8250 is very easy to use, with all features and settings grouped in clear menus that are navigated via a large, responsive and bright 10.8 cm touch screen.

Equipped with an SD card reader and usable via a USB cable, the Pixma TS8250 is of course equipped with a Wi-Fi module that allows it to be shared on a local network and installed anywhere at home. The Wi-Fi Direct is also part of the game for a direct connection from a smartphone or tablet. The printer is then controlled via the Canon Print app, which is also particularly clear and efficient.

Consumption🖨️

Not surprisingly, the energy consumption of the printer is under control. It requires only 1 watt in standby and 18 watts in full printing. Noise levels are also very similar to those of previous models. Our sound level meter positioned at 1 meter reads 42 dB and 53 dB in peak, respectively in photo printing and during the printing of a document of several pages. One hears this printer working, but at an acceptable noise level, knowing that a silent mode makes it possible to sacrifice a little of its speed against more calm.

Like the Pixma TS8150 before it, this TS8250 works with 6 Canon PGI/CLI 580/581 cartridges. Based on the current prices of XXL cartridges, we calculate a cost per page a little above average: 11.2 euro cents (0.112 €). In black and white, the cost per page is 3.5 euro cents (0.035 €).

Scanning and copying are functions that the TS8250 performs quickly. Count 10 and 11 seconds to scan respectively an A4 document in 100 pp and a 10 x 15 cm photo in 300 dpi; 11 and 15 seconds to copy an A4 document in black and white and in color. It is worth mentioning that the quality of the copies is good, which is not always the case. Even if they lose a little bit of contrast and precision in the process, the direct copies (photocopies) are perfectly readable and usable.

Canon is used to excel in the field of photography. A little slower than the TS8150 to print a 10 x 15 cm photo (58 seconds), the TS8250 compensates by being faster than the latter in A4 (1 min 18 s). The accuracy of the prints is always at the top and the color drift is very limited (the delta E measured with the probe is 5.7).

We note however a slight regression on this point, the delta E of the TS8150 having been measured at 4,7 and that of the TS8050 at 5. Let us recall that the delta E makes it possible to measure the difference between the printed color and the target color, and that the eye does not perceive any more the drift below a value of 3. If as regards screens an average delta E of 5,7 is not satisfactory, that remains an excellent value for the photo prints of a printer. Few manufacturers manage to propose models as powerful in this matter.

As the new flagship of the Canon

Office automation🚀

The Pixma TS8250 is faithful to our expectations in office automation. It climbs to 14.3 pages per minute in color (14.3 ppm), but is still penalized in black and white due to the drying time it regularly imposes between two pages. As a result, its output is only 6.3 ppm in this exercise according to our measurements. In automatic duplexing, it is not the fastest either (4 ppm).

Fortunately, it easily compensates for these rates, which remain acceptable for family use, with an excellent rendering. The texts are perfectly readable on light or dark backgrounds, the solid colors and the gradients stand out well, the blotting effect is perfectly controlled... we find nothing to complain about.

Time to get the first page out

Turned on and ready to print, the Pixma TS8250 takes 7 seconds to print its first page. A timer that goes up to 22 seconds when leaving standby and 31 seconds after a power off. Be careful, these figures were measured with the motorized paper tray still extended. Its deployment can extend these times by 10 to 20 seconds when it has been retracted beforehand.
